Gospel of Thomas Groups
The Gospel of Thomas is a non-canonical gospel largely regarded in the Christian tradition as a wisdom text. It consists of 114 cryptic sayings that are described in its introduction as "the hidden words that the living Jesus spoke and Didymos Judas Thomas wrote…down." Here we find no story telling about the life of Jesus, just his teachings. Each saying, referred to as a Logion, begins with these simple words “Yeshua says…”
Seekers who are interested in the Gospel of Thomas sometimes find themselves feeling a bit isolated and out of the mainstream. My Gospel of Thomas (GoT) groups, conducted online through Zoom, are a great remedy for this. They provide participants with the opportunity to explore the wisdom stream of the Christian tradition with open-hearted, like-minded individuals. The deep sharing and bonding that occurs in these groups becomes an ongoing sacred community which often results in a stable group over time.
How the sessions work.
My GoT groups generally meet once a week for 60 minutes using a Lectio Divina approach to reading The Gospel of Thomas. The Logion is read aloud twice, after which participants are invited to share their responses to the reading.
The somewhat mysterious and esoteric nature of this gospel has the effect of disarming the rational, thinking, logical mind and creating space for unknowing. In this way, the text creates room for pondering and sharing, which is where the real work of transformation can begin to emerge.
